Problem:
It is Thursday morning when I open my MacBook Pro in the office. I start the day by reading my emails in Outlook for Mac. But the first thing I notice is that the order of the folders on the left-hand side is no longer A to Z. It’s all messed up.
Folders starting with S are at the top and folders starting with A are in the middle.
Restarting Outlook for Mac and the MacBook Pro does not solve the problem. Strangely, my colleagues are not experiencing this problem. We all use Microsoft Outlook 16.95 so it can’t be a bug in the latest version of Outlook for Mac.
I can’t find any reports of this problem on the Internet either. But it does irritate me. It doesn’t work very well when you have to search through the list of folders for the right one every time because it’s not in alphabetical order.
Solution:
By default in Outlook, you can right-click on your account name. In my case, that is my full e-mail address. Then you can click on the option ‘Sort subfolders from a-z’. But I don’t have that button at all but my colleagues do.
In addition, it should also be possible to drag and drop folders in Outlook for Mac but I don’t have that feature either.
It is important to note that we are using Microsoft 365 or Office 365.
The following solution does work for me:
- Close Outlook
- In your browser, go to https://outlook.office.com
- Log in with your e-mail address + password
- On the left, click on “Inbox” or the main folder containing your folders
- Click on “View” at the top
- Click on “Folder pane” > “Sort folders” > “Custom folder order”
- Point with the mouse to a folder in the left-hand side and you will see 3 horizontal dots
- Click on the 3 dots and drag the folder to the right place
- Repeat this for the other folders
- Click on “View” at the top
- Click on “Folder pane” > “Sort folders” > “Folders from A to Z …”
- Start Outlook and the folders are now from A to Z again
